The Kohala Coast includes all of South and North Kohala, which are two political districts on the leeward side of Hawaii Island. For most visitors, “Kohala Coast” refers to South Kohala and the resort areas. Old time locals think of North Kohala, and former sugar town Hawi. Hawi is a tiny little town with a few small businesses and galleries. North of Hawi is Kapa’au, where Kamehameha’s statue stands gold in the center of town. Farther along the winding road ends with spectacular views across the channel to Maui.
Visitors staying in the Kohala Coast resort areas typically make sightseeing excursions south. Kailua-Kona, known locally as Kona, is located in the North Kona district. South Kona is coffee country. The road here runs much higher along the mountain, with stunning views of Kealakekua Bay.
Miles and miles of arid black lava fields are visible when flying into Kona. Hawaii Island is dominated by three volcanoes, one of them famously active. Kilauea’s lava continues to pour across the land and into the ocean on the other side of the island. The Kohala Coast lava fields are old, but geologically recent, so they have just a thin cover of vegetation, if any at all. Access across the lava fields is very rough. There are a few 4WD roads to the ocean but the going is slow. Good news: white sand Hapuna Beach State Park is within reasonable driving distance from Kona.
